About Us

Welcome to Salt Creek Farm. We’re Sara and Jay Shivers, the folks you see getting into all kinds of shenanigans with cattle, honeybees, chickens, and ducks. Salt Creek Farm is located in the lush Flint Hills of Kansas, just south of Eureka. Spring-fed Salt Creek begins just north of our homestead, winds around to the west, and flows southeast beyond the farm. Salt Creek provides fresh water to our cattle, frequent adventures for our kids, and is a beautiful terrain feature in the rolling Flint Hills. We're fortunate to have a water source that also happens to have the name of our favorite seasoning. We couldn't think of a better name for our farm.

The Flint Hills is an excellent place for cattle. The native, tallgrass prairie produces some of the best beef in our country. Our primary focus is raising quality cattle. Our Black Angus herd grazes these tallgrass pastures year round. Our cattle are home-raised, born in the same pastures they raise their calves. The cattle spend all summer growing on grass and enjoy a diet of Brome, Fescue, and native grass hay supplemented with grain throughout the winter. The supplemental grain is to fill their need for protein as hay contains lower protein content than fresh, green grass.

Here on Salt Creek Farm, we finish our cattle on pasture. We call them “pasture-finished” because they are not solely grass-fed or grain-finished, they are given a free-choice grain supplement while still grazing in the pastures. We believe this creates the best possible beef. All of our beef is butchered at Bronson Locker, a quality family-run locker, and dry-aged for two weeks to enhance flavor. The combination of our herd genetics, diet, and dry-aging creates an exceptional product known for tenderness and flavor.

Though we spend a lot of our time with cattle, we also work with our honeybees that peacefully coexist in our pastures. Our bees are located in a number of apiaries across the Flint Hills and create a delicious wildflower honey during the summer. Our honey is raw and unfiltered, meaning it is minimally processed and never pasteurized for maximum flavor and nutritional value. Raw honey contains minute amounts of pollen that remains in the honey and contributes complexity and depth to the flavor. Since our honey is collected from different areas, the honey can taste slightly different depending on what flowers are abundant in that area.

As we bottle honey throughout the year, the flavor can change as we go through stored honey from these different apiaries. We seasonally offer a “Specialty Small Batch Honey” that comes from a single hive and has a particularly delicious and unique flavor. We also offer Creamed Honey, which is a finely-crystallized honey that spreads like butter, and Hot Honey, which is honey infused with chilis to bring heat and sweetness to your favorite foods.

We’re happy to partner with other farmers in our area to provide lamb, pork, and chicken. These family farms focus on raising one type of livestock and do it well. We also enjoy partnering with a number of other food producers across Kansas to share their wonderful products, ranging from Salt Creamery Ice Cream, to Pairy cookies, to Holmes Made salsas.
